About Me

 Moving Without The Mayhem

You never know when you will have to sell your house and move to a new place, but unfortunately, that was what I was faced with a few years back. I realized that I was really having a difficult time making ends meet, and so I started evaluating my options. Moving and relocating was simple, and I was really focused on saving cash. I found a cheaper apartment that worked well for my needs, and I began cutting out extra expenses to pare down the spending. I wanted to start a new website all about moving without the mayhem, so I made this little blog.

Should You Do The Final Cleaning On Moving Day?

by Erika Bell

Vacating a property — whether a home you sold or a rental you're leaving — means removing all possible traces of you having lived there. But should you do the final cleaning at the same time as physically moving out your stuff? Here are a few of the pros and cons of this approach.

The Pros of Cleaning While Moving

Probably the best reason to handle the final cleaning of rooms as soon as possible is to shorten the time frame. If you must move out by a certain deadline, this allows the most time for packing and preparation — perhaps even delaying the move until the last day possible.

You may also have the most help available on moving day. Many people only hire professional movers for a single day to handle the actual transportation. So if you schedule the cleaning work at the same time, you can let the movers take care of the moving labor while you coordinate the cleaning.

Finally, long-distance moves may work better when the cleaning is done as soon as possible. If you won't be able to return to the house or apartment once your stuff is gone, you can't guarantee that cleaning is done properly in your absence.

The Cons of Cleaning While Moving

While it's true that thoroughly cleaning rooms as they're emptied makes the work go faster, it also adds pressure to moving day. If you've procrastinated the move until you have little time left, you'll be under immense stress to get the cleaning completed on time. Any delays could create a real problem.

Moving companies often offer other services, including the final cleaning. However, they may not be able to offer this concurrently with the moving of stuff. If you plan to outsource cleaning to professionals, you may need to have more patience.

Don't overlook the added complexity of trying to clean rooms while people are still packing and loading your household goods. You'll need a larger team of helpers or pros. They can easily get in one another's way. You may see more chaos, conflicting priorities, rushing, and even safety issues. And the cleaning may not be done in the best manner.
